In July 1998 the Council decided that Hammersmith Bridge will re-open when the works are completed in Autumn 1999 to all traffic up to 7.5 tonnes. Once this decision had been taken, the Council had to take account of it's commitment to securing high quality public transport within the borough. This would be an important contribution to developing a comprehensive, integrated and sustainable London-wide transport system, one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Measures will be put in place, in conjunction with Richmond to give priority to buses using the bridge.
